The Mamirauá Sustainable Development Reserve is an area with more than 1 million hectares of lakes, marshy forests and jungle. Together with the Amanã Reserve and the Jaú National Park, it forms the largest area of protected flooded forestlands in the world.
Since 1999, the reserve, which was chosen the best destination for ecotourism in the world by the North American magazine Condé Nast Traveler, has been a model for the protection of vast expanses of forests. Located in the Middle Solimões, the reserve became a protected area in 1990 when it was declared an Ecological Sanctuary. In 1996, after publication of the Management Plan, it was categorized as a Sustainable Development Reserve, combining the preservation of the area with the managed use of resources by the local population.
